WALKING THE MYSTICAL PATH

In 2003, I became too disabled to continue to work outside my home, so I retired to a desert location on the edge of town to live as an urban hermit. Several factors have coalesced into this obvious vocation choice. I had practiced contemplative prayer for many years, as a nun in a Hindu convent in Los Angeles, and now as a Catholic, in New Mexico. I joined the Catholic Church in 2006.

Later, my genealogy expertise led me to the knowledge that I am descended from many favorite saints. I also learned that I am on the autistic spectrum, as a high-functioning person. They used to call this high-functioning autism "Asperger's Syndrome" and I still use that term, myself. Several of the Asperger's syndrome traits lend themselves very well to the life of a contemplative urban hermit.

Traditional monastic life reflects itself in a life of "prayer and work," (Ora et Labora) and my life is composed in the same way. I have a regular schedule of prayer and work, though it looks different than your typical monastic life, because of my disabilities. I am in an electric wheelchair half the time. I am also blind in one eye. But I make the best of all of it and do what I can.

I fund my hermitage from the Social Security Retirement monies I paid into the system when I was working in my youth, for more than 30 years, but it is a meagre income and I do accept donations through a GO FUND ME website.
