TELL ME WHO YOU ARE

The Annunciation
by Merode

Every day, lately, individuals are standing up and announcing who they are and who they serve. These are fractious times, with tumult, political infighting and disputes in government, on the one hand, and a dangerous, never before seen pandemic virus on the other.

Leading us is an insane, unstable despot, which is no "leadership" at all. What we choose now comes entirely from our natural stores of energy, spiritual wisdom and discretion. We do not have a shining example, or a light on The Hill.

Some people chose the way of selfishness by running to the store and sweeping all the shelves clean of essential products necessary to basic survival. Water. Toilet Paper. Frozen food. Hand sanitizer. They took more than they needed so that the rest of us would have none, thus exacerbating an already frightening situation.

About a week ago, I went on the hunt for canned food and frozen vegetables. First, I went to my neighborhood Walgreens, and discovered that the food shelves were completely empty. It was as if giant locusts had swept through the place. I was able to buy some over-the-counter medicines I needed, some cleaning supplies and a tin of cookies, but when I checked out, I discovered that Walgreens had attached very tall pipes to each shopping cart so that I was not able to get my purchases to my car. I asked the checkout clerk how I was supposed to get all the bags to the car.

She just looked at me and said, "You can't take the carts out of the store
any more," as if that response answered my question.

"Everywhere I go, no one cares about the disabled old people," I announced. Two clerks looked at me, slack-jawed and unresponsive.

Despairing of getting some help, Juggling my purse, my cane, my hat, my sunglasses, and 2 bags of miscellaneous non-food items, I hobbled to the car. I still needed canned foods and frozen vegetables. I was already exhausted, and the throbbing pain in my legs and hips was making its opinion known.

Less than a mile from that Walgreens is a Lowes neighborhood grocery. It is a small store, much easier to navigate than the large supermarkets that proliferate in this town, but you pay for it with very high prices and ancient expiration dates.

I asked the clerk working in the canned food aisle to notify the manager of the grime that was caked on top of the cans of corned beef hash. I was hoping they may have had some cans that didn't look like they were leftover from WWII. She mumbled a word salad of completely unrelated concepts and did nothing. Even when I nudged her about getting the manager for me, she burbled another word salad and made no move to get him.

Completely grossed out by the disgusting sediment on top of the cans, but realizing I could wash them and that I should not be so delicate, I gingerly put a supply of canned beans in my cart and prayed that the dirt wasn't some sort of contagion. The prices were shockingly high.

Standing in front of the cashier, I pointed to my cane and asked her if she would please pack the bags lightly because of my bad back and knees.

Incredibly, the woman said to me, "I am going to bag them to the top. If you want something different, you can do it yourself." Then she pushed the cans toward me and started barking orders at me, making clear her wish that I should hurry up, shut up and bag my own damn groceries. I was a bit stunned. This is not the typical response one gets in grocery stores.

When I am surprised by some sort of mistreatment, I tend to go quiet - which is not my usual personality, which is rather more bubbly and animated. But if I am shocked or upset, I don't want to emote anger into the scene. I slow down and consider the situation and my options.

The checker realized I was not obeying her commands and said, "you understand what I am saying, right?"

Quickly, I calculated the angle I would have to bend over the round carousel that used to hold a series of plastic bags. I would have to bend over it, and lift cans into a bag on the other side and then lift that bag from the counter, over the carousel, and down into the shopping cart. I realized that I physically could not do it.

Rather than try to make this woman understand the situation when she was obviously not in the mood to be the slightest bit sympathetic, I quietly answered her question by saying, "Yes, I understand exactly what you mean," whereupon I turned and walked out of the store, leaving all those dirty cans on the counter. I got into my car and headed toward another store, my pain level rising. I hoped it would subside during the ride in the car.

The next store was Sprouts, a medium-size health food store on Lomas Blvd. I noticed that there were none of the sales that they typically have and, while there was a supply of fresh vegetables, they had NO frozen veg, except one forlorn bag of corn that was suspiciously mushy. I wondered if it had been defrosted and refrozen, but decided to buy it anyway. There was a pile of 4 bags of okra. Unless you fry the heck out of it so that the texture is no longer gelatinous, okra makes me gag, so I left the okra in the freezer for the next brave soul.

Several Sprouts employees were unpacking food into the refrigerated sections. I asked three of them if they had any frozen vegetables. They each refused to help me in any way. There were frozen vegetables on the pallet, but the clerks weren't going to search for them. I took my pathetic little overpriced 2-cup bag of corn, a few cans of plain beans, and some fresh broccoli and checked out, somewhat depressed and in a huge amount of pain.

I had gone shopping for frozen vegetables and canned goods and, because of the hoarders, was not able to find these simple items at any of the stores! I had already surpassed my pain limit and was suffering too much to continue searching.

The next day, one of my neighbors flew down from the second floor to speak to me. He'd seen me with my dog near the mailboxes. He wanted to make sure and exchange telephone numbers, in case I needed anything during the social isolation period of the pandemic. Another neighbor also offered assistance. A friend from a church I used to attend has arranged to get me some frozen vegetables and will get them to me on Friday - probably about the same time I run out of the fresh ones I purchased at the health food store. A couple people from Facebook have responded to my Amazon wish list and are sending me emergency food items.

Other neighbors make a different choice. Yesterday afternoon, I happened to see a neighbor on the second floor step out onto her patio and, open mouthed with no effort to cover it, make a huge sneeze that she directed down onto all our mailboxes. This morning, the sidewalk beneath that patio is heavily littered with sunflower seed hulls that have been chewed and spat out.

It seems to me that everyone is announcing who they are every day, in their actions and their words, and it is in this atmosphere of emergency and dangerous contagion that these actions and words are highlighted, more significant, and of greater consequence than is customary.

Today is the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord. The Angel Gabriel comes to Mary and tells her that she will bear the Christ Child, and she says yes to God's call.  She will sacrifice herself for the sake of mankind, by bearing Him into the world. Her selflessness and surrender to the will of The Divine for the sake of mankind, earning profound gratitude through the ages, is an example for those whose typical reaction to the misery of the world is selfishness and self-dealing.

When we emerge on the other side of this epidemic, I believe we will have been changed by the experience, and we will know one another in a more compelling manner than we did before the Covid virus entered the scene in the middle of the Traumatic Trump times.

Until then, we all have to try and survive, as best we can. Even Amazon is being cleaned out of food supplies and every time I add something to my emergency wish list, it is a matter of days or even mere hours before their stock is depleted and there is a message next to it that Amazon does not know when or if they will get more. Even so, I will, once again, post the link to that wish list and hope that some of the basic items will eventually make their way to me in enough quantity that I can share with the other isolated, single disabled ladies who live in this apartment complex.

Thank you for helping us get through this dangerous situation.

Find my Amazon wish list HERE

I encourage you to take care of yourself and one another as best you can and to use this unexpected retreat from social life as an opportunity, of sorts,to grow closer to the Lord. He is the only one who can't give you the virus or catch it Himself, so spend some time with Him!

God save us.

CORONA VIRUS HITS MY TOWN, AND ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE

Picture of the Corona Virus

Yesterday, one of my neighbors came home after an exhaustive search for groceries to stock the pantry in preparation for a self-imposed casual quarantine. She described the mayhem she encountered; the long lines, empty shelves and packed parking lot.

All my senior neighbors are assailed with various forms of auto-immune disorders, and they cannot afford to contract a dangerous virus on top of it. Even the "common" cold can devolve into uncommon, serious illness and possibly death.

Many of the folks that are on the low-income program in this apartment complex are single, disabled seniors living on whatever social security they've managed to accumulate after many years of working. Because we have spent a lifetime working and paying bills, we have paid "too much" into social security and now, although our income is very low ($1100 a month, on average) we fall between the cracks, when it comes to government help. We don't get any. No food stamps. No discounts on our utility bills. We get a small discount on our rent, through a city program, and that is IT.

I have tried to explain the reality of this situation to people who sincerely believe that all disabled people are sucking at the teat of the state. I had one wealthy woman tell me she believed that "the government" had to pay all my expenses, including the moving truck to get me from one apartment to another. Many people on social media have expressed the firm conviction that the disability rolls are besieged with massive fraud. They have no idea how terribly difficult it is to be accepted onto the disability program, but they don't let facts keep them from blabbing their theory widely. Their toxic ignorance is widespread.

We all know that we are supposed to be kind to the old and the sick, but if the extreme right wingers can claim we are not actually sick but are "faking it", then they will have an excuse for putting barriers up to anything that might help us. They applaud Trump's efforts to cut the food stamp rolls, which are already inadequate to meet the need.

The fact is that the U.S. does a very poor job of taking care of its disabled and elderly citizens and no one should be surprised that many of us have had to resort to begging by starting Go Fund Me campaigns and Amazon "wish lists" to make up the shortfall.

Widely available statistics, if anyone should decide to simply Google the facts, demonstrate that the U.S. pays far less to its seniors than other countries. We are number 25 on the chart, far below Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, The Slovak Republic (!), Greece, Latvia, Czech Republic, and KOREA. Check out this chart and the
ARTICLE ON THE CENTER ON BUDGET AND POLICY PRIORITIES WEB PAGE

Social Security Benefits Are Low Compared With Other Advanced Countries

Ironically, because of our illnesses and allergies, our diets need to be a nutrient dense as possible. In addition, speaking for myself, I am terribly allergic to preservatives and pesticides. They cause me to have dangerous asthma attacks.

This may not sound like a big deal, but I was recently given some old yarn and, when I started crocheting with it, I suddenly could not breathe. This is why I don't typically accept yarn that has been opened and sitting in someone's house for a year or two or three. I rather like breathing.

Because of the asthma, the corona virus could be deadly for me.

When this Covid virus emergency settled in, and I started hearing about people deciding to "self-quarantine," I realized that I have NO "emergency" supplies at all. I already have trouble keeping food in my house for my monthly needs. This month, I had to buy eyeglasses, and the money had to come out of my food budget because I do not have discretionary income.

Now, here I am, very low on funds, unable to stand in the long lines at the grocery store, and needing to get some emergency supplies into the house. The other disabled ladies in my apartment complex are likewise situated.

Clearly, it is time to launch another Amazon food list.

My aim is to try to get enough supplies in the house to share among the other disabled senior ladies who live here. Amazon has my address and will ship to me direct. They always let me know when a parcel is coming, and I am typically home all the time anyway.

If you are able to help, we would all appreciate it.

Saint Amunia - Hermitess

"Hermitess"
by
Silver S. Parnell

One of the many saints for whom we celebrate the feast day today is another hermitess about whom we know little. Amunia had been a married woman, but when her husband died, she joined her daughter, Saint Aurea, in her hermitage.

October 4 -- Feast of Saint Aurea of Paris | Saints, Golden girl ...

"The Christian of the future will be a mystic or
will not exist at all."
~ Karl Rahner, theologian, priest ~

I have lived as a type of modern hermit for the last 18 years, and I am always keen to hear from other female hermits, as well as read about hermitesses who have gone before us.

Dedicating one's entire life to God in a singular and solitary manner is the original monastic expression. Sometimes, hermits would gather together in a loosely organized group, withdrawn from society to greater and lesser degrees.

This monastic life is common in Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism. Other religions may also incorporate solitary religious people, but I am not aware of those, in particular.

"I will lead her into the desert, and there
I will speak to her heart."
~ Hosea 2:16 ~

30 years ago, I started keeping the above quote, on a small scrap of paper, in my wallet, eventually losing it when it floated out one day, unnoticed until much later. That was alright, however, as I had memorized it long ago and carried it also in my heart.

Jesus himself was many times said to retreat to a solitary place to pray to his Father "in secret." Many early Christians retreated to the caves, some of which still exist today.

What is the purpose of the hermit life? To be alone, in a reverent atmosphere of silence and contemplation upon the Divine is an expression of longing for the experience of union with God and an attempt to sweep aside and leave behind everything that is not Him. Some theologians say that we are already in union with Him but that we have inserted the things of the world into the relationship and thereby ruined the experience of the joy that one feels in communion.

To come to an understanding of our oneness with the Lord, to feel it, recognize it and float on its wings, has been the urgent goal of saints through the ages, and I love to read about each of their individual journeys. At times, while meditating, I paint them, such as my work, at the top of this blog post.

One day, I had hoped to form an alliance with other independent hermits throughout the world, but perhaps it is best that this never materialized. We are meant to be alone, after all. Still, it would be lovely to provide support to other female hermits. It is still a recognized and respected vocation, but because it is mostly women who aspire to it, it is often given short shrift. Even many of our churches have lost track of that mystical thread that originated with Jesus and wended its way through the lives of many saints through the ages.

83 year-old Buddhist hermitess

Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and others share in this holy impulse to be with God, together alone. There are more of us than you might imagine. I encourage everyone to read up on our holy mothers in religion, both those who are still living and those who have passed on to their heavenly reward.

Russian hermitess Agafya Lykova
who lives in Siberia, alone

I remember reading about the "desert mothers" and the "desert fathers" when I was a nun in the Vedanta Convent. My readings of the books we carried in our catalog were my introduction to the Christian monastic and contemplative traditions. It sparked something within me which stayed with me ever since!

It is amazing to me, thinking about how long it has been - 18 years - since I first committed to the solitary life, and how I have continued this life with no earthly support from any religious institution, but with the considerable kindness and resourcefulness of well-wishers, both from my teacher in the Vedanta community and the loving attentions of my circle of Catholic friends who understand the contemplative life of the independent monastic. They are also sympathetic to the limitations of an older woman with multiple disabilities, thanks be to God!

Most of all, though, I feel the continuous blessing and encouragement of our holy mystics who have gone before us. I pray to Saint Amunia and all the other angels and saints, and ask them to intercede on my behalf to the Lord.

I also keep their memory fresh in my mind and heart by reading books by and about them. I would like to share with you some of these volumes.

I have attached a list at the bottom of this blog. It is a very short list because there is much much more. I have only included books I was able to find on Amazon, but if you would like further recommendations of books and websites about the lives of other mystics, please don't hesitate to contact me, and I will be happy to steer you in the right direction.

May the Lord bless us all.

BRAZEN LIARS

"The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in
people who are trustworthy."
Proverbs 12:22

America has become a nation of feckless, unrepentant liars who use deceit to manipulate other people into giving the liar something he or she wants. Usually, it is money or power or some derivation thereof.

No, this isn't a blog about Donald Trump, though it easily could be, because he is the most obvious and most prolific example of what I am talking about. (Currently, he is lying about the number of Americans stricken with the new "novel" corona virus, disputing the number reported by the scientists at the Center for Disease Control.)

No. I am making an observation about our culture, in general, and how low our moral personality, as a whole, has sunk. I will give you an example.

Tonight I received an email from Amazon, the title of which read:

"Silver Parnell, here's a $5 credit toward your wish list title."

In the body of the email, Amazon names the book which is supposedly on my wish list, and I do not recognize it. I have quite a few wish lists, so I look through all of them, on the off chance that I have accidentally put this particular book on one of them. I have a habit of falling asleep at the computer, and I posited that it might be possible that I inadvertently added it somehow, while dozing off, but no. There is no such book anywhere on any of my lists.

"For, whoever would love life and see good days
must keep their tongue from evil and their lips
from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil
and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it."
1 Peter 3:10-11

So, I call Amazon and ask them what the heck is going on and why have they sent me this weird email. I am concerned that they may have confused me with someone ELSE and have mixed up my account with someone else's account, which would be disastrous, since we all have our banking information saved with Amazon.

The first rep keeps trying to guess at what might have happened. I keep telling him to stop guessing and let me speak to somebody who knows. He keeps putting me on hold. 16 minutes later, I insist that he let me speak to someone else. He says he will, but he keeps talking and he keeps guessing. I am getting more and more concerned because his English isn't good and he is wandering all over the topic. I keep asking him to let me just talk to someone who knows rather than him, because he is just speculating. I can speculate also, but that isn't what I want!

"You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to
carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from
the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no
truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language,
for he is a liar and the father of lies."
John 8:44

Finally, he says, "who do you want to talk to? You have to give me the name of a person, otherwise I can't transfer you." Apparently, I am supposed to have such magnificent psychic abilities that I can simply pull a name out of my transcendent clairvoyant brain. Of course, I recognize this for what it is - a delaying tactic of someone who does not want me talking to his supervisor. I suggest he just connect me to whoever can answer this question for me, so he tells me I need to tell HIM the name of the person or the department!

Really aggravated at this point, I point out to him, again, that I am not psychic. He is supposed to tell ME the department or the person who can answer this question. After all, the email came from Amazon, not from me - but he just mumbles and bumbles around and will not. Finally, I am fed up and demand to speak to his supervisor. I've been on the phone for 26 minutes and counting.

The supervisor speaks English really well and comprehends my concern immediately. She admits that this email is really weird, but she seems to know who to talk to about it, so she puts me on a brief hold, then connects me with someone named "John" who will explain it to me.

35 minutes on the phone, and counting.

After a short conversation with John, he informs me that the email I received is a "legitimate offer." Apparently, someone at Amazon decided they would be clever and send me an email in which they try to make it look like they were giving me something I supposedly wanted, by lying and saying that this book they are flogging is something on MY wish list. Except that it isn't. It is all just a big fecking lie. THEY want to sell this book and they don't mind lying to manipulate me and whoever else to whom they've sent these fake emails.

When I object to this underhanded, unscrupulous and really reprehensible fabrication, John behaves as if I am being unreasonable. He sighs and explains, again, in the tone that one uses with someone less intelligent than oneself, that it IS a "legitimate" offer. They really ARE giving me a five dollar credit toward the purchase of this book - so it isn't "fake." It is a real offer.

I object, again, to the lie that the book is supposedly on my wish list and, like Mick Mulvaney trying to defend Donald Trump's insidious mendacity, "John" repeats that it is "a legitimate offer," as if the lie is completely irrelevant and I am being really stupid for objecting to it.

39 minutes and I am done.

"In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in
Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and
impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and
being deceived."
2 Tim 3:12-13

Yesterday I was supposed to receive a Sunday parcel from Amazon of an order I had placed a few days previously. Amazon sent me confirming emails that the U.S. Postal Service would be delivering it on Sunday. The Postal Service itself gave me a running commentary, via email, about the whereabouts of the package, in each leg of its journey from Amazon to me, but what happened is what always happens when the Amazon packages are supposed to be delivered on a Sunday. The postal carrier lies and says they can't get into the building. What has actually happened is that they are too lazy to be bothered to find the apartment. So they lie.

I could write a blog post every day and call it "the lie of the day" and have no trouble writing a story about the latest lie.

There was a time, not so long ago, that no one wanted to be caught telling a lie. There was a time when it would embarrass just about everyone who was caught in a lie. Fervent excuses (and perhaps more lies) would be piled onto the original lie in which they had been caught. No one wanted to be known as a liar.

"Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, but
afterward his mouth will be full of gravel."
Proverbs 20:17

Nowadays, however, many Americans brazenly lie and then gaslight anyone who objects. Americans now stand by their lies and defend them with bizarre, twisted logic, like Kellyanne Conway and her "alternative facts."

It makes me really sad and sometimes mad, to be lied to on a consistent basis, by friends, family, neighbors, merchants, and that freakish carnival barker and his outlandish companions who somehow found their way onto The Hill and who behave as if a lie repeated often enough becomes the truth, as if by magic.

"Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and
harbors deceit in his heart; when he speaks graciously,
believe him not, for there are seven abominations in
his heart; though his hatred be covered with deception,
his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly."
Proverbs 26:24-26

Many of these people who are lying to me and to you and to the rest of the American people are claiming to be Christian. Christians love Jesus, and Jesus tell us that those who love him follow his commandments. You just can't deliberately lie and mislead people and con people over and over again and, at the same time, pretend to be shining the reflected glory of the light of Christ. You just can't.

And, as a merchant, you can't continually express the mawkish sentimentality of pretending to care for the welfare of your "Amazon Prime" members while trying to dupe them at the same time. You just can't.

"See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy
and empty deceit, according to human tradition,
according to the elemental spirits of the world, and
not according to Christ."
Colossians 2:8

While it is fairly clear that I find it upsetting to be lied to so frequently (and in such a adolescent and transparent manner), what I find most sad is that none of these liars will experience the bliss of being in union with the Lord if they keep up this deliberately deceptive lifestyle. And it IS a lifestyle when lies are routinely employed by a person as a method of getting what they want from others.

Living in harmony with the Lord means you are living a heaven on earth. The Kingdom of God is among you - if your soul is submerged in the love that is God.

Tonight I am praying for all the liars of the world. I pray they stop the lies, the schemes and the cons. I don't need to name them. They know who they are. But I DO pray for them, by name, here in my little hermitage, not only because I find it annoying to be lied to but because I want the entire world to be able to experience the transcendent, gorgeous love of God, and they can't until they stop lying.

God save us all.

EMBRACE THE HAT

My 20th cousin, 5 times removed
She wears hats very well.
(Queen Elizabeth II of England)

I have a wonderful neighbor with a very loving disposition, who is a follower of a philosophy I call "cosmic poo poo." Whenever I let slip the words, "when I lose my vision entirely" or something to that effect, she jumps right on me. She believes (and many do) that people create the world with their minds. While I agree that the attitude with which you respond to events can have a bearing on how it turns out, I don't believe in the simplistic causal relationship between my mind and everything that swirls around me. I LOVE life, I have many artistic and creative projects in the hopper, and I fully intend never to die, for instance, but I have a feeling that, no matter how consistently I affirm that idea, I will die one day.

In my personal approach to life, I recognize that the world does not revolve around me. There are other people and groups of people and systems of operation, and corporations that also have intentions that produce effects upon us all. Humans rub up against one another and act upon one another and cause things to happen to and around one another that may not be what the recipient imagined for themselves.

My version of "having a positive attitude" requires me to be plastic, flexible and a bit bouncy in my response to stressors. My aim is to greet them with as much of a happy attitude as possible because, no matter how many times I might click my enchanted shoes together and repeat some voo doo formula, my problems do not magically disappear - which is not to say that I do not believe in miracles. I most certainly DO believe in miracles, but I know that miracles are caused by the will of God and not my own mind.

Obviously, I am not speaking from the vantage point of the higher reaches of unitive thought in which I am one with my God, but I would just remind you that one only reaches such oneness by abandoning the individuality that would keep one apart from deity to begin with - so it is STILL the Lord who wills the miracle into being, and not ourselves. To claim that "I" can will the world to obey me is obviously a false claim - which is why I call this idea "the cosmic poo-poo."

Image result for oz dorothy red shoes "There's no place like home"
Just click your heels together and say:
"There's no place like home - There's no place like home..."

I have noticed that many people who are convinced that the cosmic poo-poo philosophy has worked for them are usually those people who have egos that refuse to acknowledge the help they've received from outside themselves. Often, they have hidden or ignored resources in the form of other people, such as devoted family members, or they have been in the right place at the right time to be the recipient of the world's largesse. Donald Trump's father gave him $400 MILLION dollars to start himself out in life, and, because Trump knows he did not earn his wealthy status, he has spent his entire life in a pathetic string of self-promotions, even going so far as to create phony magazine covers that he blew up and installed on the walls of his business property. He never credits his father for his wealth.

Image result for "woman wearing a traditional HAT"

The fact is that while most people work very hard in their lives, not everyone "pulls themselves up by their bootstraps" to become a millionaire or a best-selling widget maker or a musician or...whatever. It simply is not possible for everyone to get there, through hard work or "positive thinking" (cosmic poo-poo.) My position is that you probably can't succeed without confidence and hard work but very few people in possession of those attributes actually find that it works for them in the ultimate sense, absent other factors. People who work very hard, whose jobs involve physical labor, like cleaning houses, for instance, can work 60 hours a week and never take a day off and will never, ever become millionaires. I was a legal secretary for many years, and a very good one - but the only person who got rich was my boss, who had a house in Beverly Hills, while I could barely afford a run-down apartment in Hollywood.

Image result for "NUN WEARING A FUNNY HAT"

Given all this, when the doctors told me a few years ago, that I have macular degeneration that will gradually destroy my vision, and that it is important to eat the Mediterranean diet, take the scientifically tested vitamins, and protect my eyes from the sun by wearing hats and sunglasses every day whenever I go outside, I followed all of these prescriptions. I didn't sit down and start reciting spellbinding formulas like, "my vision is perfect" or whatever the cosmic poo-poo people say I should do in order to manipulate the world.

Image result for "NUN WEARING A FUNNY HAT"

I can't say that my prayer life changed at all either because my attention is typically with God all the time, as a matter of course. The thing that is most important to me is to be immersed in God consciousness and to trust That. But I am not an automaton. I have human fears and apprehensions because I am still rather attached to this wonderful world, but I am working on releasing undue attachment, rather than expending useless energy trying to will the world to accommodate me.

One the other hand, we would not be here, in this world, if it had no value. The Lord has put us here for some reason and, I am sorry but no one really knows what the reason is, so we have to trust that "something good is going on," as the swami once said, and proceed accordingly.

Image result for "NUN WEARING A FUNNY HAT"

Instead of greeting the necessity of wearing hats as a sad reminder of a frightening prognosis or a descent into unfashionable "old lady" territory, I embrace it and turn it into something fun. I have several hats in different colors that I regularly decorate with beaded bands that I make, or inexpensive sparkly little pins. I admit it isn't "nunnish" but I have no uniform to which I must conform, and no superior to whom I will answer for my silly hats. If my prescription eyewear wasn't so darn expensive, I might resort to some outlandish style with those as well. Perhaps, in that case, it is best that I am too poor for it.

I don't think many people in my town wear hats - so wearing any hat at all makes me an object of attention, which I typically do not want. As I write this, I am trying to remember seeing anyone wearing a hat in the last 20 years, and I can only think of one person who wears an actual hat with a  proper brim, and that was one of my neighbors who works in the entertainment industry. I can't even recall seeing anyone wearing a baseball cap, though I am sure there must be a segment of the population who wears them to sporting events. Oddly enough, there IS a man's hat shop here in town, so there must be some call for it. Perhaps the gentlemen are saving their hats for when they ride into Santa Fe. Who knows?

Here, we see that we can mix two interests in one:
fashionable hats and gardening.

Obviously, I am going rather far afield to make an elementary point. The world does not revolve around each one of us. It simply can't, and it isn't meant to. Our much vaunted "American individuality" gives the mistaken idea to many of us that we are in charge of more than what is within our bailiwick. We are not in charge of what others do to us. We are only in charge of what we actively do and how we greet what happens to us. I recommend that we not only "accept" our bad fortune, but find a way to also embrace it and celebrate some part of it, if we can.

Now, I must close because I have a cane waiting for me to decorate.

God bless us all

FATHER FRANK PAVONE AND HIS OBSESSION

Christ Pantocrator - Wikipedia

I wish that American Catholics were as enthusiastic and one-pointed about evangelizing the culture with the beautiful faith of Christ as they are about pursuing political remedies for abortion. It looks very much as if one aspect of an enormous and hugely nuanced and modulated faith has been surgically excised and then soaked in a Republican bath, like a piece of lime floating in a gin and tonic - with plenty of ice.

For the sake of the unlikely possibility that America will return to the days when abortion was illegal, the "pro-life" movement is ignoring every other aspect of a truly pro-life philosophy and have put into office cruel and brutal despots who seem to care more about hurting vulnerable people, especially the poor, and in helping the handful of billionaires becoming more rich and powerful than in doing anything else.

Outlawing abortion is one proposed method of supposedly eliminating abortion. Someone, somewhere along the way decided that "pro-life" meant only and exclusively that one was devoted to making abortion illegal. People who advance this devotion to this particular method call themselves "the pro-life movement," but that is a misnomer.

The Brueghel Dynasty: Collecting Guide | Christie's

Outlawing abortion is a piece of a fruit which is a piece of a tree, and it is not even the only fruit of that tree. It is one of many fruits produced by the tree. Without the tree, the fruits would not exist, and if you were to produce such a fruit out of thin air, in some magical fashion, it would not make sense if one did not know that there was such a thing as a tree that produced it.

Catholicism is pro-life, but not in this miserably truncated sense of "pro-life" being ONLY the pursuit of a law that outlaws abortion.

In the context of Catholic faith, a "pro-life" orientation encompasses an enormous number of factors. After all, the subject of "life" is not easily reduced, is it?

For instance, the health of people and the life of the planet, in general, are obviously factors in a global and cohesive "pro life" outlook, but these are issues to which the "pro-life leaders" are hostile. Since "pro-life" Trump has been in office, he has ripped away many safety regulations that affect all life on the planet - and not just the ones that directly speak to climate change.  I could write 12 blogs about those measures alone.

Everyone having enough food is another pro-life topic. One in six children in America don't have enough to eat.  Throughout the Bible, we are told that we should feed the hungry and clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, love our neighbor and enemy alike, befriend the alien and visit the prisoners - but the Republican platform does the opposite of all that, while at the same time claiming to be the party of life!

Modern Republicans CUT food stamps and seek to cut more - while children go hungry. In fact, they encourage their minions to look down on the hungry children of poor people, claiming that the poor are just lazy. We are back to the days of Ronald Reagan, who inveighed against "welfare queens" and their families, routinely criticizing women having more children which Republicans claim they are only doing for the purpose of getting a bump in their welfare checks. This is NOT pro-life! None of it! At this point in history, the only people who benefit from Republican governance are the very wealthy white men at the top of the pyramid, which is exactly why Republicans desperately need abortion to remain legal, because the campaign to outlaw it is the only tool they have in their arsenal. It is the only way they can get the poor and middle class to vote against their own best interests.

While I write this, a bill is being introduced to cut medicaid again - something Trump promised NOT to do when he campaigned. The only program available to help poor, disabled seniors who make between $1,000 and $2,000 a month, the Medicaid Waiver program for disabled people, will be one of the first programs cut, if Trump succeeds. Millions of grandmas and grandpas will suffer. Today, as one of those grandmas, I am going without one of my medications because it costs $450.00 a month and there is no substitute. I am praying that I get approved for this program, which is a long, complex process full of red tape which, even if I qualify, will have to be repeated in only a year because there is very little money available for these programs and Americans are obsessed with the idea that there are "millions" of grandmas "gaming the system." It isn't true, but Americans are being encouraged to compete against and vilify one another.

The first thing Trump did, out of the gate, was to ban certain types of people from coming here (Muslims), followed quickly on its heels with a "zero tolerance policy" that was deliberately calculated to discourage refugees from coming over our borders, resulting in thousands of brown children being ripped out of their families and incarcerated in cramped cages in hastily erected detention camps where other children are caring for babies, viruses are endemic and untreated, and children sleep on cement floors behind barbed wire. The government refuses to give flu shots to these kids who are living in cramped, crowded conditions. It reminds me of our treatment of Native Americans, when we gave them pox-infected blankets.

There are some fake memes being circulated that claim that President Obama did this "first," but it is as close to a lie as you can get. Obama did not treat every refugee as a criminal, but where criminals with previous known crimes DID step across our borders, he did incarcerate and eventually deport them. In fact, he was called the "Deporter in Chief." Obviously, the children of the incarcerated alien could not accompany him to jail, so there were a few children who had to be taken care of - but nowhere near the numbers we have now, and not under current unhealthful conditions.

[I would insert a note, here, that it isn't the idea that our borders should be safe and protected to which the more liberal population objects. NO. Everyone wants our borders protected. It is the manner in which it is done that is at issue. Trump is fond of spreading the lie that Democrats want "open borders" and a free-for-all. That claim is just stupid.]

Watch the Jeff Sessions video HERE

Jeff Sessions announced the new policy and plainly said that children would be removed from their families in an effort to deter refugees from coming here, and that, if families do not want their children taken from them, they should stay home - as if all these poor people, fleeing for their lives from gangs and corrupt governments, are sitting in their homes watching television and heeding his words!

Thanks to Trump's "zero tolerance policy," we have had something like 4,000 children in our custody. A judge has ordered them returned, and some have been, but the program was so poorly administered, we do not know where some of the parents are. Many children will never see their families again. This is an horrific "pro-life" cause that needs to be addressed but which the "pro life movement" is either ignoring or defending, saying that it is "the parents' fault" that we stuffed them into cages. Not true.

"Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and be no longer
stiff-necked. For the LORD, your God, is the God of
gods, the LORD of lords, the great God, mighty and
awesome, who has no favorites, accepts no bribes;
who executes justice for the orphan and the widow,
and befriends the alien, feeding and clothing him.
So you too must befriend the alien, for you were
once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt."
Deuteronomy 10

The pursuit of justice so that authoritarian regimes do not go hog wild and start killing the citizenry is another pro-life concern ignored by the self-named "pro-life movement." Even forgiveness and prayer for one's enemies slips into this category, since the escalation of hostilities, if allowed to progress in the heat of the moment, can (and sometimes does) become armed conflict that kills people. Even the restraint of the tongue has a place in this "pro-life" orientation because what one says is very important and can exacerbate a situation to the point where it endangers the lives of people.

"I tell you on the day of judgment, you will have to
give an account for every careless word you utter."
Matthew 12:36

"Pro life" Trump's vulgar tongue, his misogynistic, prejudiced taunts are often taken up by his followers and spat out upon everyone in their vicinity - online and in person. Disabled people are not immune to his filth, enduring taunts, jeering and mimicking. Even I have experienced discrimination at the hands of a Trump follower who told me, "I believe in Trump's law. If you don't have two arms cut off or two legs cut off, you aren't disabled." This man, an employee at the Smiths on Constitution and Carlyle in Albuquerque, New Mexico, ridiculed me for not being visibly disabled, told me there are "too many of you" (disabled people) and when I asked him how we disabled people were supposed to do our shopping if we couldn't park in handicap parking, he said to me, "I guess you won't." He was stone cold in his approach, and exceedingly arrogant, treating me as if I was a scam artist he was ferreting out. Trump nation.

Frank Pavone campaigns for Republicans and defends all of the above, in defiance of specific norms and rules against promoting political parties that have long been established by the curia. It makes him a "hero" to his followers, but his superiors have an entirely different perspective.

I could go on for a few pages with examples of different aspects of a pro-life philosophy that are being ignored by the "pro-life movement." Homelessness comes to mind.

"You shall give generously to [your poor brother] and
your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him,
because for this thing the LORD your God will bless
you in all your work and in all your undertakings."
† Deut. 15:10 †

The primary fallacy in the "logic" of the pro-life movement is this: In addition to ignoring all but one pro-life cause, they are completely ignoring the root cause of the one aspect of "life" they care about - the abortion crisis in America. Women do not have abortions because they are legal. They have them because, for some reason, they believe they need one. When abortion was illegal, there were still plenty of abortions being done. They were just being performed under cover of darkness; hidden, dangerous and expensive. Many times, both woman and child were killed. Often, the woman suffered damage to her reproductive organs and could never bear children again. None of that is "pro life."

If no one felt the need for an abortion, there could be an abortuary on every corner and they would all stand empty. There would be no "customers."

Clearly, the fact that abortion is legal is not the cause of abortion.

We could debate, at length, what exactly IS the cause, but that's not the purpose of this blog post. One cannot do the topic proper justice in a blog post. Research, canvassing, facts, studies and statistics that prove the causal relationships are what is required - and none of that is easy or quick or simple.

Evangelization isn't simple either. I am seeing a theme here.

Our elegant, thoughtful, faith-inspired, nuanced, complex, many-layered faith has been turned into a hammer with the hyper-focus, one could even say the obsession, surrounding a proposed political "solution" that isn't likely to be achieved and wouldn't accomplish the stated aim anyway. Why?

It seems fairly obvious to many of us that the Republican Party, in a cynical attempt to grab and keep power, has convinced a segment of the American population that if they vote Republican, then the Republicans will outlaw abortion and everyone can congratulate themselves that they've won a war for Jesus.

By enforcing the ideas that (1) the legal availability of abortion is the cause of abortions; (2) a "pro-life" orientation only pertains to whether or not abortion is illegal; (3) the Republicans are the only party that says it is "pro-life," and (4) you therefore HAVE to vote for them if you are Christian, the Republican Party has latched onto a huge segment of Americans.  If you take apart their faulty logic, which is excruciatingly easy to do, it is clear that their vise-like grip on Christians is based on a pack of self-serving lies. A 2008 article from "America - The Jesuit Review" discusses this in part, HERE in a piece titled "Voting One's Conscience."

Our popes have tried to get us back on track with this topic, discouraging priests and others from aligning themselves with political parties instead of The Church, but the propaganda arm of the GOP is far better than that of The Church, which is suffering a crisis of confidence in the wake of horrific child-abuse and sex scandals. The Republicans are the ones who are telling us that no good "Christian" can vote for anyone other than a Republican and still be in obedience to the faith. That isn't true, of course. Our popes tell us this isn't true, but the prospect of being a "pro-life" crusader for Christ is too tantalizing and, instead of heeding the teachings of The Church, many Catholics look to the Republicans to define their faith and morals for them.

"A Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil,
and so unworthy to present himself for holy communion,
if he were to deliberately vote for a candidate precisely
because of the candidate's permissive stand on abortion
and/or euthanasia. When a Catholic does not share a
candidate's stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia,
but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is con-
sidered remote material cooperation, which can be
permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons."
~ Pope Benedict XVI ~

As a result of trading in their faith for a political party, Catholics and Christians of every stripe have begun to treat political figures like demi-gods, giving them the same reverence and awe that they used to slaver onto priests, bishops and popes. Despite the fact that Donald Trump's actions and words are the antithesis of Christian teaching, he is being treated like the savior of the world. Rumors abound, to the effect that he is the leader who will set into motion the great "End Times" that includes the second coming of Christ.

Popes, bishops and priests who try to re-direct the attention of their flock and who point out the flaws in the words and actions of these political leaders are attacked by the "faithful," denigrated and slandered, while the few priests who cater to the so-called "pro-life" movement are turned into superstar "saints" who are, for all intents and purposes, given carte blanche by lay people to behave as they like, and who sometimes buy into the adulation of the masses.

This is what has happened to Frank Pavone, who, since 2011, has been in hot water with his superiors and became more and more an authority unto himself, culminating in an horrific sacrilege of incorporating the body of a dead aborted baby into a sacred mass in which he placed the dead body on the altar in November of 2016 as a political stunt calculated to steer Catholics toward voting for Donald Trump.

A still purporting to be from a Mass Fr Frank Pavone celebrated with the body of a deceased baby on the altar. Photo: Patheos

[This photograph, from the video, is CENSORED because it shows the corpse of a dead fetus that he had displayed on the altar, in an alarmingly sacrilegious manipulation designed to grip the emotions of Catholics.]

"We have to decide if we will allow this child killing
to continue in America or not. Hillary Clinton and
the Democratic platform says yes, let the child-killing
continue (and you pay for it); Donald Trump and the
Republican platform says no, the child should be
protected."
Fr. Frank Pavone

Pavone had been given the baby's body by a pathologist who had been routinely tasked with its disposition. Rather than have the child "disposed of" as medical waste, like an amputated arm or an unwanted cancer, he gave it to Father Pavone for the express purpose of burying the child, but Pavone did not do that. Instead, Pavone began a series of carnival-style mockeries of a sacred mass, even going so far as to live-stream and videotape and post it on Facebook. The photo, above, is a still picture from that video. The 44-minute long video also shows him elevating a poster that displays graphic abortion methods. (This video has been subsequently removed, I believe, from Facebook, though I have no doubt you can find a copy somewhere on the internet. Nothing is really erased from the internet.)

Priests are specifically enjoined from working on behalf of any political party or candidate, but Pavone went rogue, long ago, urged on by the fawning sycophancy of his followers. This is what happens when you isolate and remove one piece of a philosophy. It turns into a fetish.

To this day, it does not appear that the baby's body has been buried. Instead, it is apparent that Pavone is keeping it for possible further use in his propaganda campaigns. That poor baby has no rest, unless you think floating in a chemical solution in a glass jar  in some back room of a church constitutes being put "at rest.'

In response to an onslaught of complaints about the dead baby mass and its video, Pavone's diocese immediately began an investigation and issued a statement saying that "Priests for Life" is not a Catholic organization and not under their control and that the mass using the child and the posting of that video are "against the dignity of human life and is a desecration of the altar."

"The Diocese of Amarillon deeply regrets the offense
and outrage caused by the video for the faithful and
the community at large. The action and presentation
of Father Pavone in this video is not consistent with
the beliefs of the Catholic Church."
~ Bishop Patrick J. Zurek ~

As early as 2011, Pavone had already been recalled to his diocese and suspended from priestly functions outside the diocese to answer for his lack of transparency with regard to the finances of his pro-life organization and his refusal to cooperate with his superiors when asked.

"Whatever set this conflict off, it's unfolding has exposed,
in my opinion, a deficient attitude from Fr. Pavone in regard
to the clerical obedience he owes his bishop and even in his
understanding of the purpose of priesthood."
~ Edward Peters, Canon Lawyer ~

Most recently, I see that his insubordination has grown in leaps and bounds. When asked the name of his current bishop, he refuses to give it but asks, instead, "you mean my slave master?"

I have listed some of my sources, below. If you read the post on Patheos by Mary Pezzulo, there is  good reason to believe that Pavone is in possession of two baby corpses that died in the late 1970s and that he is using them in his traveling horror show.

In the post from Keith Michael Estrada, Also on Patheos, there is a timeline of events that will be helpful in understanding what has happened, over time, with this renegade priest and his minions.

My position, if you haven't figured it out yet is that we should not be sacrificing every other part of our religion for the sake of pursuing the dream of making abortion illegal.  The ghoulish carnival barker in a priest collar who uses the bodies of dead babies to win converts to Trumpian Republicanism misrepresents the faith and shouldn't be followed by the laity under any circumstances. Lauding this misguided man will help to ruin him and the faithful should just stop doing it.

In addition, we need to wake up to the fact that our horrifying "pro life" trade-off in which we have traded our entire religion for the sake of making abortion illegal, has resulted in the installation of a fascist government that is hostile to life, in general, and, if not curtailed soon, may be responsible for the death of all life on our planet. It sounds extreme, but this is where we are. Climate change is altering the planet rapidly while, at the same time, American democracy is falling off the rails, thanks to an insane and brutally dangerous occupant of the Oval Office, who is being supported and encouraged by a Republican Party that has orchestrated a fetishized, cynical propaganda campaign, using a bastardized vision of faith as a tool.

By removing crucial regulations, backing out from the climate accord, denying science, and allowing big donors to pillage the earth, Trump is making the earth an unfit home. Topping this off with more tax cuts for the ultra rich coming down the pike, combined with more cuts to an already inadequate and failing social safety net, the effects will be catastrophic - and very soon.

It isn't just the types of policies that are dangerous, it is Trump's methods, redolent of the abuse of office and brutality most often found in third world banana republics with primitive dictators at the helm. Whoever dares to even utter a word of disapproval is walked out of the government offices under armed guard. Often their relatives are also made to suffer, such as the case of Lt. Col. Vindman, the highly decorated officer who obeyed a congressional subpoena and gave testimony during Trump's impeachment hearing in the House. His twin brother, who had nothing to do with any of this, was walked out with him, in a very public retaliation, calculated to put fear into the hearts of anyone on The Hill who might have thoughts of opening their mouths and speaking Truth or advocating for justice and the rule of law.

Fortunately, some members of the intelligence community, which is being aggressively hollowed out by Trump's retaliations and slander, are fighting back. But when the guy at the top of the pile is calling out their wives BY NAME and thereby threatening her and the children - publicly - it can give you pause.

All of this is right out of the authoritarian playbook. Hitler and others have used these methods. Lies, slander, fear, retaliation, brutality; all of these are common to the dictator.

Frank Pavone is enabling all of it, offering up his Catholic followers in the same way he offered up that dead baby on the altar. All of it is obscene and none of it is endorsed by the Catholic Church. As mentioned before, his supervisors and all the ecclesial authorities above them have tried, and failed to rein him in. His bishop has objected to Pavon's "incorrigible defiance of my legitimate authority as his bishop," but Pavone is emboldened by the adulation of the crowd and has not shown any sign that he has taken to heart the attempts of his superiors to guide him.

It won't matter, even if Pavone could somehow get a law passed, outlawing abortion. We are all going to be dead before long, anyway, if the natural results of the Trump Administrations removal of regulations and sanctions have their natural result. Scientists have said we have about ten years in which to turn this toxic boat around. After that, it goes over the waterfall. Human beings, animals, trees, plants, insects - even the cockroaches. We'll all be dead. Not very pro-lifey, if you ask me.
